What is a Draft Horse?
We get this question a lot! Draft Horses are the largest of the horse breeds. They were bred for farm work and/or to pull a wagon/load. They are also referred to as a draught horse or a heavy horse. Draft Horses are large; they can weigh 1,600 pounds or more and stand at least 16 hands high from the ground to its withers (one hand equals 4 inches). They are known for their quiet and calm temperament and their sweet personalities. For pleasure they are used for driving, trail riding, parades and showing. The Budweiser Clydesdales are draft horses. A Clydesdale is just one of the many draft horse breeds.
About the Connecticut Draft Horse Rescue (CDHR)
We are an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of draft horses that were victims of starvation, neglect, abuse, or whose owners were no longer able to provide for their needs. To date, we have rescued more than 90 horses and adopted many to loving new homes! On March 20, 2019, the Connecticut Draft Horse Rescue, its volunteers and its founder Stacey Golub, DVM, were recognized by the State of Connecticut and the members of the General Assembly for its dedication to saving and improving the lives of draft horses.
