Various: Take Your Child to the Library Day

Description: February 9, 2019 is Connecticut’s Take Your Child to the Library Day! Libraries around the state will be hosting special events and activities to encourage children to visit.

Started as an international initiative that encourages families everywhere to take their children to their local library, this event was established right here in Connecticut by librarians Nadine Lipman (Waterford Public Library, retired) and Caitlin Augusta (Stratford Library), and artist Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. The event creates awareness about the importance of the library in a child’s life and helps to encourage children and families to use their library’s services and programs.
First launched in 2012, Connecticut Take Your Child to the Library Day has grown into a fantastic international celebration that includes nearly 1,000 libraries from 49 states and five countries. The event was developed to spotlight libraries as an essential community resource that helps to “enrich, educate, and entertain, and to encourage families to take their children to visit their local libraries.” Free, fun, and family-friendly, the event is supported by Connecticut Library Consortium and endorsed by the Association for Library Service to Children (a division of the American Library Association), that encourages everyone to “Reach Out and Read, and Read to Grow.”
